American Psycho – Review

What a fucking film.

American Psycho directed by Mary Harron, stars Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a wall street investment banker who has a thing for violence, and with such a simple concept… so much was done. This is easily one of the most entertaining films I’ve ever seen.

Never have I ever seen something so bizarre and yet… entertaining. This of course is mainly because of Christian Bale’s excellent performance. This is up there amongst some of my favourite performances for an actor, alongside Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange and Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler. He constantly switches between being confident and charming to terrifying and unpredictable, and I loved it. This is easily his best performance and it’s awesome to see this character. What he does and what he somehow gets away with…. is greatly amusing. His character is unforgettable and some of the crazy things he’s done in the film. helped propel this film into cult classic status.

Every actor in this film is greatly over the top, even though they are as flat as a new sheet of paper. Some viewers won’t like that, but the performances make the characters explode out the screen.

Another thing that helped make this film a cult classic… is it’s soundtrack, and it is glorious. From Phil Collins to Huey Lewis and The News, this soundtrack makes some of the most horrific scenes, ridiculously enjoyable in their absurdity. Plus who doesn’t love Whitney Houston.

Now from a technical side, the film is really well done. Especially the opening sequence. I loved that sequence, because of it’s beautifully simple subversion. I do have one very small flaw with the film, but most people wouldn’t notice, so I won’t point it out as I don’t wish to ruin a great experience.

Watch this film. This is easily one of the most engagingly bizarre films I’ve ever seen and it’s cult classic status is earned.
